免疫抑制剂和抗炎影响的皮质类固醇，特别在较高剂量，可以减少主抵抗传染，减少有能力本地化的感染，和掩蔽症状的感染。二次感染可能是更可能得到发展。在一般情况下，皮质类固醇不应使用的患者活动感染，尤其是系统性的真菌感染，除非它们是医学上必要和有效的抗菌剂疗法或其他适当的治疗已被提起。然而，对于皮质类固醇依赖性的病人发展的一个严重的或危及生命的感染，继续皮质类固醇治疗至少与生理更换剂量应该加以考虑，因为这些患者可以有二次肾上腺功能不全。除外类固醇期间压力可能会损害到这些患者。
